Affirmative Prayer
With our thoughts we make the world
- Gautama Buddha
As a child, I was raised to think of prayer as asking for the help of a remote God, and it seems that the more I prayed for something that I wanted and was not experiencing, the more remote it felt, the more I felt the lack. I fell away from church and from really experiencing God for a long time, and it was later in my life when I began to explore to make a connection with God that I also started to recognize how I was reinforcing what I was not wanting in my life, and learned a new way to approach prayer.
Metaphysics has found that our intention and the words we speak matter, and our thought is creative. Thoughts transmit energy and this energy attracts energy of the same frequency. Whether you are conscious of it or not, your thoughts are transmitting energy that is attracting more of the same.
Affirmative Prayer creates a mental equivalent for a desired physical manifestation and sets into motion the power of creation. All things first had to exist in a mental state before they could exist in a physical one.
The first step is to be clear and specific about the intention. Then we realize: that God has the answer to any perceived need; that we are One with God so we also have the answer; we claim the manifestation of this specific divine good; heal any perceived barrier to manifestation and then accept this good, release our focus on the problem and in silence receive the Good. The principles underlying affirmative prayer include these from the Unity Church.
1. God is the only Presence and Power in the universe and in my life.
There is a Universal Mind, Spirit, and Intelligence that is the origin of everything. It is First Cause. It is Love. It is God. It is Good and only Good. All qualities of good are facets of God.
2. Our essence is of God; therefore, we are inherently good.
We are surrounded by, immersed in, and there is flowing through us, a creative Something. It creates and sustains us and all life. “In God, we live, breathe and have our being”. As an eternal soul created by God we have also all the same Divine qualities.
3. We are co-creators with God, creating reality through thoughts held in mind.
Every person stands in the shadow of a mighty Mind, a pure Love, a Divine giving-ness. It gives alike to all. Its nature is to give. In expressing Itself through us, It becomes more fully conscious of Its own being. Therefore, It wishes to express through us.
We have free will. It can pass into expression through us only as we consciously allow It to do so. We can shape the expression of divine energy by our intention and conscious will. We use the power of our creative thought and creative word to bring the qualities of God into physical manifestation, into our specific situation.
4. Through prayer and meditation, we align our heart-mind with God.
God and goodness is the only reality, and all that appears to be less than good is simply separation – our forgetting the truth. God nature is our natural condition and arises naturally when all opposing illusion is released.
The mental attitude of the practitioner is one of denial toward every false condition that opposes the principle of Life as one of absolute perfection. We open the way for the manifestation of our intention aligned with Divine Will as we heal and release all opposing illusion.
5. Through thoughts, words and actions, we live the Truth we know.
We consciously set our belief that we are expressing this good not only in the formless realm of Spirit, but here and now in the physical and mental realms, right where we are experiencing it. We accept in our awareness that this that good is here now.
Gratitude is an attitude and an emotional acceptance of the manifestation. Bring it into the emotional level and feel gratitude for the manifestation. Give thanks in advance.
Surrender the outcome to Spirit and allow the manifestation to occur. Let go and let God.
